Christmas Decorations: 6 Tips for Clearing Them Away

Ideas and tips to keep it organized.

After the holidays, if your home is anything like mine, your home is left a cluttered mess from all the Christmas decorations, a hectic schedule with holiday celebrations and activities, and all the Christmas gifts that have yet to find a home. These tips will help you organize your Christmas decorations to banish the chaos, creating a clean slate for the new year.

1. Donate

Before you begin, decide if you have items that you no longer use that can be donated. This eliminates a lot of the storage problems if you don't plan to use some decorations again, but definitely keep anything with sentimental value-regardless if its broken or old.

2. Decide Where to Store

To start, analyze where you store Christmas decorations and use this information to determine what size or type of products you will need to purchase. If space is limited, shop for under-bed storage boxes, closet hanging bags, or if its going in the attic then larger plastic tubs may be more appropriate.

3. Group Christmas Decorations into categories

Next, decide how to group your decorations. You can group them by color, theme, or if they are just similar objects (like all the snow village decor), etc., This will be useful if you choose to only use a specific theme or color next year, saving you time by not having to go through ALL the decorations looking for a specific item.

Pro tip: Check for store sales at the end of year on plastic storage containers. Most of them will have discounts, especially after Christmas, and these are great for storing smaller decorations such as, candles, garlands, and delicate objects that need to be wrapped.

4. Label

I love to label things! But seriously, I do recommend using labels on containers so that you can find things quickly, or if you are looking for a certain theme of ornaments or decorations specifically, which is why grouping them works so well. You can hand write label stickers or create your own and print them out for a more professional look.

5. Roll String Lights

String lights are the most beautiful AND arguably the most frustrating part of Christmas decorating. Reels that roll up without causing tangles saves so much frustration. Plus, the reels that come in a container is super handy keeping them all organized together.  A budget-friendly tip is to use cardboard to wrap the strands around. This keeps them separated and easy to unwind the next use. For the teeny strings of fairy light (they're usually shorter strands), just wind them around the cardboard roll from paper towels.

6. Store Wreaths

Wreath storage is super easy. Simply pop them in a container or I hang them on a large hook in a closet, which I'll link below.
