My husband and I just recently updated our kitchen counter stools. So trust me when I say that these are all tips learned the hard way. We chose a modern style, with backs and lots of cushion for ultimate comfort. We chose to only put two stools at the counter (even though technically we have space for 3 with a counter length of 85 inches) because we wanted more space and and to avoid an overcrowded feeling.
Unfortunately, this exact counter stool is no longer available, but these are very similar here.

Kitchen Counter Stools: Do You Need Counter or Bar Height?
First grab a measuring tape to see if you need counter height or bar height. It's important to get this step right. I speak from experience, it's not comfortable leaning over a counter when you buy the wrong stool lol!
Countertops are typically about 36 inches from the floor. So counter height stools will have a seat that is 24-26 inches from the floor.
Bar height counters are typically 42 inches from the floor. So bar height stools will have a seat that is 30-32 inches from the floor.
The space between the stool seat and the counter needs to be 10-12 inches, for optimal comfort.

Kitchen Counter Stools: Spacing Between Stools.
The number of stools you need depends on the space and room you have available. The minimum amount of space we like to have between stools is 24 inches. Anywhere from 24-30 inches is comfortable and gives people room to not bump elbows sitting next to one another.
Also, on the subject of spacing, we recommend leaving 36 inches at least behind stools for a spacious feel. This leaves room to pull them out and be seated comfortable, with walking space behind.

Kitchen Counter Stools: What Style Is Your Kitchen?
You want your stools to not only fit in your space, but also to fit with your style of kitchen. The correct style will make it more aesthetically pleasing, whether your style is modern, rustic, farmhouse, or traditional. Plus, using the correct style as a filter helps narrow down the shopping possibilities.
Kitchen Counter Stools: Consider Comfort.
Comfortable features are a personal choice. For us, having a back was non-negotiable. We've had wooden stools with no back before and absolutely hated them because they were so uncomfortable. For some maybe you know you want cushions. It really depends on you and your guests needs. Sometimes its easy to get caught up in the moment of a style we love, but then 6 months later it's so uncomfortable no one will sit there.

Kitchen Counter Stools: Let's Be Practical. Cleanability?
The same advice goes for how easily will they be able to clean and maintain? If you have young kiddos take that into consideration when choosing the upholstery. Darker colors or leather will be much easier to clean up after meals. If you're an empty-nester, go for the lighter colors!
